Mason Hargrave, PhD
AI Researcher
Mason Hargrave specializes in applying artificial intelligence to healthcare challenges, focusing on two key areas: using reinforcement learning to optimize medical decision-making and developing machine learning approaches to identify biomarkers for psychiatric disorders. His work on psychiatric biomarkers particularly emphasizes the analysis of facial expressions and vocal patterns to better understand and diagnose mental health conditions.
Mason holds dual BS degrees in Computational Mathematics and Physics (Highest Honors) from UC Santa Cruz, where he helped establish the UCSC Braingeneers team. His doctoral research, which was supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, introduced EpiCare, a novel benchmark for evaluating reinforcement learning methods in healthcare settings, and provided critical insights into the challenges of applying AI to clinical decision-making.
As the founder of Hargrave & Associates Data Science Consultancy, he has led numerous successful AI/ML projects for major healthcare and technology organizations. Through his work, Mason aims to advance the responsible implementation of AI in medical decision-making while ensuring patient safety and improved healthcare outcomes.
Beyond his primary research focus on healthcare AI, Mason maintains broad intellectual interests in space exploration, urbanism, and longevity.
