First passages

One of the most important problems in stochastic dynamics is the first passage problem: when does a fluctuating quantity first attain a given bound? Due to the difficulty of this problem it has traditionally been studied using master equations for the probability distributions of the first passage time. We have developed a path-centric framework to study individual paths and their first passages, including an extremely efficient algorithm for computing actual first passages.
