For a long while we have been working on optimal transport networks and their relevance to the structure of leaf veins. We have just published a result showing that not only resilience to damage, but also resilience to fluctuations in loads, cause the optimal delivery network to acquire the characteristic loop-within-loop structure of leaf venation.

The paper was published in Physical Review Letters, and some images appeared in the cover.

The story and our videos of transport in leaves have been picked up in various places: RU Newswire, Physical Review Focus, Physorg, Science News, Physics Today, Culturing Science, The Economist, Softpedia, Treehugger, and at some point we were dugg.
